Given the fact that we are talking about a mattress, being comfortable is one of the most important things on the list. Air mattresses are generally quite comfortable to rest and sleep on. However, there is still the constant reminder that you are not sleeping on a real foam mattress. Therefore, it is quite amazing to see how well this mattress performs. The six-inch thickness is plenty for keeping even the fussier sleepers comfortable during the night. Even if you sleep on your side, this mattress has enough depth to provide you a comfortable position without sinking to the ground. It is perfect for spreading as well since the mattress is easily capable of fitting two people. The coil design that you see in the mattress is also quite effective when you are sleeping with a partner and do not want one’s movement to disturb the other since it minimizes the air shifting significantly.
Warmth and insulation
As far as the warmth is concerned, you are not getting any dedicated feature from this tent. The company does not provide any information regarding the insulation properties so you should not expect anything from it either. One could argue that you are practically sleeping on an air cushion, but that air does not do much in terms of insulation. There is no R value provided with the mattress anyway and our estimate says that it would not be more than 0.7 or 0.8. If you do decide to choose this as your mattress of choice, be sure to arrange for proper heating as the mattress will not be providing any warmth.
Durability and Quality
When it comes to air mattresses, good quality material is pretty much essential for its survival in the wild. The ALPS Mountaineering Vertex Air Bed has a thick material which allows it to not only withstand a good amount of air pressure, but it also makes it durable when you are pitching it out in the wild. Having a mattress that pierces easily can be a huge nightmare and the thick material on this mattress allows you to avoid that problem without any issues.
Of course, that durable structure and rigidity also means you can have good air pressure, allowing you to stay relatively flat when sleeping. The 500 lbs. rating also means you can sleep two relatively heavy people on this mattress without the fear of it getting damaged. There is nothing that you could complain about in terms of material with this mattress.
Weight and Packed Size
Even though a mattress is quite an essential item for outdoor activities, you cannot have it too heavy as that would cause a lot of hindrance. Thankfully, the ALPS Mountaineering Vertex Air Bed is one of the lightest options that you can go for in the market, at least in its own quality bracket. With a total weight of just over 4 lbs. you can carry it around quite easily without it causing your tiredness on its own. This means that you could use it in places where you would find it difficult to take something like a cot and may be considering using a sleeping bag alone. Also, once you get used to sleeping on this outdoors, going back to solid ground simply does not seem like a viable option.
The ALPS Mountaineering Vertex Air Bed comes in two different sizes. One is queen which can sleep two people and the other one is a twin size which is meant for single person use. The twin mattress also comes with a weight capacity of 250 lbs. which is plenty for most people. As for the weight, the twin size is almost half the weight of the queen mattress. It still provides 39 inches of width which provides plenty of room to move around and choose the sleeping position that you prefer. This is also a lot more width than what you get per person on the queen which has a total width of 56 inches.
One of the things that are worth noticing about the ALPS Mountaineering Vertex Air Bed is that it comes with an electric pump as well. The pump is quite versatile, and you can use it either with a wall outlet, a car charging port, or even using the internal battery. The pump also has the option to both pump and vacuum, allowing you to inflate and deflate the mattress in no time at all. The mattress also has a single direction air flow design which means you do not have to worry about losing air after you are done filling it up.
Another thing worth noting is the design of the mattress which is especially made to even out the weight distribution as much as possible. This is quite helpful in making sure that you sleep comfortably without falling into odd positions and waking up with an ache of some kind in your body.
